I still remember the time I stagger stepped back because I heard a guy friend describe choir as "the gay class," but only in the context of the men in the classroom, (I guess women who sing aren't necessarily lesbians). I never associated singing with anything male or female and assumed no one else did either. What could be more universal than singing? Plus, we had a decent amount of guys in our choir class in high school. I had no idea that men felt pressured not to study music. I studied French, too, and I definitely noticed we had more girls than boys in our group while the German class was almost all boys. It's crazy how that stuff can fly over your head when you don't have vocabulary or context for it.
