Pope Francis Thinks Pet Owners are Selfish

But he also said something really nice…

Last week, the Pope spoke to a general assembly in the Vatican and let them know that if any of the faithful had a dog or cat and no kid, they were the problem.

As reported in The Guardian, Pope Francis stated, “Today … we see a form of selfishness. We see that some people do not want to have a child. Sometimes they have one, and that’s it, but they have dogs and cats that take the place of children. This may make people laugh but it is a reality.”

He went on to tie the supposed problem to dropping birth rates, a loss of familial culture, and claimed, “a denial of fatherhood and motherhood and diminishes us, takes away our humanity.”

If you’ve been anywhere near social media in the past week, you already know how this went down. Pope Francis’ remarks got dragged all over the place. People who can’t have children, have lost children, or simply chosen not to have them all pointed out that their pets are a great source of companionship and that the Pope is named after Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.
