I work with a lot of authors as well and I find a lot of writers fall into the trap of repetitions. I see it all the time — a writer finds a word that feels right and then types it multiple times in the same story or article.
People repeat themselves constantly in speech, so it doesn’t feel wrong to repeat, repeat, repeat when we type. But hand that piece with the word “just” or “very” in every other line to a reader? Forget it. It becomes indigestible.
I recommend anyone working on their word economy, (as you did with your article), find good editing software that will highlight repetitions or echoes in the text. Also, there are free, online thesauruses that help me out when I’m stuck.
